Renewable & Recycled Resources

At Owens Corning, we put the three Rs – reduce, recycle and reuse – to use every day.

Owens Corning’s company-wide focus on reducing waste – defined as any effort that does not deliver value for customers – is driving our continuous improvement. We make sure all of our employees know what waste is so they can recognize it and reduce or eliminate it.

In addition to reducing waste, many Owens Corning products are made with renewable resources, recycled materials or reused byproducts of other production processes. Here are a few examples:

  • Owens Corning Fiberglas™ insulation is certified to contain at least 40% recycled content1 – the highest certified level in the industry.
  • FOAMULAR® insulation is certified to contain at least 15% recycled content. Also, the FOAMULAR insulation production process recycles 100% of its own scrap1 – there is no foam waste taken to a landfill from our factories.
  • Cultured Stone® manufactured stone veneer products are made with fly ash, a byproduct of another manufacturing process.
  • Roofing, paving and industrial asphalts are produced from asphalt flux. Asphalt flux is essentially the material that remains at the bottom of a crude oil barrel after gasoline and other high-value products are refined.

In addition, our science and research efforts are allowing us to use more post-industrial and post-consumer recycled content in our products. All without diminishing their quality or performance.

Company scientists also are seeking ways to improve the end-of-use disposal of our products.

  1. 1 The levels of recycled content have been confirmed by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an independent, third-party organization established to certify environmental achievements.
