Owens Corning is applying sustainable practices along our entire supply chain. We are collaborating with customers and suppliers on how we can strengthen our commitment to sustainability.

One example can be seen in the SmartWay Excellence and 2006 Shipper of the Year awards Owens Corning received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) SmartWay Transport Partnership. These prestigious awards identify us as a leader in our logistics and environmental improvement efforts in freight transportation.

The EPA said Owens Corning was honored based on the following factors:

  • The company was instrumental in growing Carrier Member Partners in SmartWay (we use 63 SmartWay Partners)
  • Investing in technology to measure and reduce waiting time at our facilities
  • Establishing anti-idle guidelines with the joint efforts of our carriers at all of our facilities
  • Providing a safe environment for drivers while on our premises

In addition, Owens Corning has implemented several other practices with an eye to fuel efficiency and sustainability:

  • Drop and hook procedures are used to reduce idle time with van trailers
  • Intermodal transportation is considered for all longer-distance shipments
  • Full truck loads are used whenever possible to conserve fuel and minimize the number of trucks on the road
  • Delivery scheduling is optimized to reduce idle time
  • Our carriers are required to go through a certification process
  • We have leased 71 lightweight truck trailers for our roofing facilities to lower fuel consumption and the related emissions
